20,000 Parts and No Photos: Using Diagrams as Visual Context
Most replacement parts in a large catalog will never get a real photograph. The exploded diagram they came from already shows where they sit — which makes it the most practical visual context most product pages will ever have.

A customer lands on a product page for a switch, a bracket, or a hydraulic fitting and finds a part number, a price, and an add-to-cart button — no photo. They can't tell from the page whether it's the small bracket or the larger one that looks almost identical, or where it's supposed to sit on their equipment. So they close the tab and call instead, which is the exact outcome the product page was supposed to prevent.
This isn't a case of a business neglecting its catalog. It's a scale problem.
At catalog scale, photographing every part is rarely practical — but the exploded diagram each part came from already shows where it sits, which makes it the most useful visual context most product pages will ever have.
Why most parts never get a real photo
A parts catalog with tens of thousands of SKUs would need tens of thousands of studio photographs to have one for every listing — and that number keeps growing as new parts are added and old ones are superseded. Many of the parts in question are rarely sold, have generic descriptions, and only still listed because a customer with an older unit might need one.
Photographing all of them isn't a backlog someone forgot to clear. It's a project that doesn't have a finish line because the catalog continues to grow, parts are superseded, and the ask is simply impractical for most companies, which is why so many catalog pages simply ship without an image and stay that way.
What doesn't really fix it
Two common workarounds address the symptom without closing the gap.

What a diagram already provides
An exploded diagram wasn't drawn to be a marketing asset, but it already contains something a studio photo often can't: where the part sits relative to everything around it. A single photo of an isolated bracket says relatively little. The same bracket shown in its assembly — attached to what, positioned how, near which other components — gives a customer something to compare against the actual unit in front of them.
That's the same diagram, section, and bill-of-materials row already produced when a manual is converted into a hosted, browsable manual page. Reusing it for a product listing doesn't require a second photography project; it requires connecting a product to the diagram it already appears in.
What this looks like on the product page
In practice, a hosted product page can show the diagram context a part came from alongside its listing — an image derived directly from the original diagram, with a caption naming the manual and section it's from, so a customer can see where the part sits before adding it to a cart. The underlying bill-of-materials row also links the other direction: from the diagram page, each part row includes a direct path to that same product.
Both directions rest on the same connection — the part staying tied to the diagram it came from — rather than on a second, separately maintained image library. Where that connection exists for a given part, the diagram supplies the visual context a photo would otherwise have to.
No callout overlays or clickable hotspots
